Ghost Towns. For me, photography has always been about accurately capturing a moment in time—documenting an
event, a person, a landscape. However, photography can also be an invitation to see the world differently. When the
photographer takes an unconventional approach, the viewer must must work a little harder to see the subject of the image
as well as the photographer’s intent.
Rather than capturing a literal representation of the interiors and exteriors of the buildlings that make up the Bannack and
Bodie Ghost Towns, the images in this series attempt to capture multiple aspects of Bannack and Bodie. Two realities are
represented—reflected exteriors of buildings mirrored in imperfect original window glass and indistinct interiors of the
rooms into which the camera is aimed. Combining two views in one image is initially confusing. The images appear to be
out of focus or double exposed mistakes. However, on closer examination, the two aspects of the image can be discerned.
Although the physical aspects of the towns remain, they exists as a populated place only in memory. Memory, like an
abandoned town, degrades over time. These images record Bannack and Bodie in their extended state of decay.
